Signal waveform is the basic physical layer element that fundamentally determines the most important key performance indicator in communication systems, namely spectral efficiency. Traditional waveforms rely on orthogonal Nyquist shaping but result in restricted spectral efficiency. Non-orthogonal waveforms have been proposed to enhance spectral efficiency via compressing either time or frequency resources.
