Second messenger (p)ppGpp (collectively guanosine tetraphosphate and guanosine pentaphosphate) mediates bacterial adaptation to nutritional stress by modulating transcription initiation. More recently, ppGpp has been implicated in coupling transcription and DNA repair; however, the mechanism of ppGpp engagement remained elusive.
